Sailors looking to compete at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships - the main qualifier
for the 2012 London Olympic Games Sailing Competition – are a step closer to fulfilling their dreams
with the announcement of the Event’s qualification system.
In making today’s announcement Perth 2011 Event Director John Longley also revealed the
appointees to the roles of Principle Race Officer, International Technical Officer and Chair of the Jury
for the World Championships.
Qualification for Perth 2011 is divided into two main categories - fleet racing and match racing and
every ISAF Member National Authority (MNA) is entitled to one priority place in each event,
according to Mr Longley.
“Although each MNA is guaranteed only one place per event, they could get up to six places each, in
less numerous classes,” he explained.
Additional places will be granted based on the respective 2010 World Championships (or the
European Championships for Stars and 49ers), and on ISAF rankings.
“MNAs decide which sailors actually go to the Olympics to fill the places earned at Perth 2011,” he
continued.

In addition, ISAF’s Qualification Commission may allocate 10 per cent of each event’s quota.
The ISAF Executive has appointed Charles Cook (USA) as the Principle Race Officer (PRO),
Bernard Bonneau (FRA) as Chair of the Jury and Dick Batt (GBR) has been chosen as the
International Technical Officer (ITO – measurer). At the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Sailing
Competition (held in Qingdao), Charles Cook was Chair of the ISAF Race Management Team,
Bernard Bonneau was on the ISAF International Jury and Dick Batt was Chair of the ISAF Equipment
Committee.
Seventy five per cent of nations competing at the 2012 Olympic Games Sailing Competition in
Weymouth and Portland (UK) will be decided at Perth 2011. The World Championships will be held
in Perth, Western Australia, from 3 -18 December, 2011. This is the principle qualifying Event for all
10 Olympic sailing events.
More than 1,400 sailors, representing 80 different nations, will converge on Fremantle next year,
making Perth 2011 the largest, single event ever held for Olympic Sailing Competition.
