Warren Jones Int Youth Match Racing Regatta Report
The News

The Warren Jones Int Youth Match Racing Regatta was held by Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club from 1st-4th February 2010. This event is one of the most prestigious Youth Match racing events in the world and now is the qualifier for the Danish Open (World Match Racing Tour event). Our team for the event was the same that competed in the Colin Mullins Regatta just days beforehand, featuring Chelsea Hall, Mark Spearman, Mark Whittington, Jake Flintoff and Michael Taylor.
Day one of the event was a tough one for our team. We faced the top 4 ranked teams straight up and couldn’t manage to win any of these despite leading at times in a few of them. We knew we were sailing well so we tried to remain positive in tough circumstances. Our next race was against the fellow RFBYC team skippered by Peter Nicholas. We managed to lead for a while in this race, but then lost our lead after a tactical error which left us lagging with no wins from five races.
In our next race we faced Denmark skipper Martin Boiden and his team and managed to end the first day on positive note with a win which still left us in last place at the end of the day  with a lot of work to do and a scorecard of One win and Five losses.

Perth 2011 Announces Qualification System
The News
Written by Samantha Scott

Sailors looking to compete at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships - the main qualifier
for the 2012 London Olympic Games Sailing Competition – are a step closer to fulfilling their dreams
with the announcement of the Event’s qualification system.
In making today’s announcement Perth 2011 Event Director John Longley also revealed the
appointees to the roles of Principle Race Officer, International Technical Officer and Chair of the Jury
for the World Championships.
Qualification for Perth 2011 is divided into two main categories - fleet racing and match racing and
every ISAF Member National Authority (MNA) is entitled to one priority place in each event,
according to Mr Longley.
“Although each MNA is guaranteed only one place per event, they could get up to six places each, in
less numerous classes,” he explained.
Additional places will be granted based on the respective 2010 World Championships (or the
European Championships for Stars and 49ers), and on ISAF rankings.
“MNAs decide which sailors actually go to the Olympics to fill the places earned at Perth 2011,” he
continued.

GBRW news - Night Race
The News
Written by Paul Terry
Tuesday, 23 February 2010

Anyway Race Week is over for me and I'm back in Albany town. The Night Race became a typical soldiers race after the fiasco of the position of the Day Buoy. They changed the line but didn't change the position of the Day Buoy. All of Div 1 headed towards the jetty directly upwind of the line and couldn't find the mark. They couldn't find it coz it hadn't moved.

I think it was Jaffa who was the first to bear down for the Day Buoy and the rest finally twigged on. Didn't help the Div 2 guys that went hard left and had to bear down considerably to get to the mark. Form then on it was follow the leaders for Div 2, R2D2 & Grand Prix.

They had a fantastic match race all the way to the finish and there was less than a boat length in it at the line - not sure who beat who as the results are not up on the GBYC site or the Sportpage site.

Unfortunately for the Tiger the reach from 5 to 4 & 3 was too tight for the A7 and then the run up to 2 at the end of the jetty was too deep for us to make any headway on the leading two.

Now I've got a couple of days of work then up to Mandurah for the Mirror states on the long weekend.

Tristan and team doing the deed.

The 2010 Colin Mullins Int Youth Match Racing Regatta was recently held at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club from 28th – 30th January 2010. Our team for the event consisted of Chelsea Hall, Mark Spearman, Mark Whittington, Jake Flintoff and Michael Taylor.
Although our preparation was far from optimum for this event (due to the majority of the team competing at various National Dinghy Championships all over the country), we were keen to put in a solid performance and qualify for the prestigious Warren Jones Int Youth Match Racing regatta.
We started off really well with wins against the Japanese team of Yoshida and also against Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s Jordan Reece and his team. We also had wins against Martin Boiden & Mark Lees all the way from Denmark and Great Britain respectively. Our other win came against our fellow RFBYC team skippered by David Gilmour.

Olympians coach at Mandurah Easter Regatta
The News

Doctors Note: This has to be a must do regatta.  Awesome job MoFSC!

The Mandurah Offshore Fishing & Sailing Club’s annual Easter Regatta will feature Australian Laser Champion and International Sailing Federation (ISAF) ranked Laser sailor Tom Slingsby.

The regatta, which will be held from Friday April 2-5, will also feature:
• Arthur Brett a former Olympic coach, Perth 2011 Emerging Nations Program head coach and current Fremantle Sailing Club head coach
• Belinda Stowell, WAIS head coach and former Olympian gold medalist
• Craig Ferris, the Singapore Olympic coach, and Susan Ferris, an international coach.

MOFSC Regatta chairman Kevin Luff said the high calibre of coaches forming this year’s coaching team surpassed any seen in Mandurah.

“This regatta is significant to the growth of sailing in WA and the Peel Region.  It is a prestigious event that is the only sanctioned coaching regatta in WA,” Mr Luff said.

“It provides a unique opportunity for many young sailors to be coached by an elite team of coaches.  Coaching is available to all participants on Good Friday from 12 noon to 5pm as well as on the water coaching over the weekend with de-briefings each race day.

“There is also a much anticipated Sailing Forum planned for Sunday, April 4 at 5pm, with a panel that includes Tom Slingsby, Arthur Brett and Belinda Stowell.  There is also a possibility of Singapore sending a team of their Olympic aspirants to the regatta.”

Mr Luff said it was a great coup for the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club, not only for its junior and senior sailors but for all sailors in WA, to have access to such a high profile panel of coaches.

Day 2 saw some mixed fortunes. After an embarrassing display while passing the check-on boat, Peter Chappell's Rum Jungle took line honours in the sportsboat division while Tim Reger's Viper won handicap honours.
David Clifton's Eftel streeted the premier cruising division but Corniche won on handicap after a race-long stouch with Slipstream. ... See moreOptimus Prime and a couple of the other big boats managed their way through the black hole at Bunker Bay while others parked for a very long time before emerging again. Next Factor took the IRC win in Div 1, Mind's Eye in Div 2 and R2D2 in Div 3. Matador, Michael Cameron's Albany based Flying Tiger, continues to set the pace at the head of the Div 3 fleet, while David Gilham's Arajilla was first to finish in div 2.
